August 30, 2013                   BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT

Hello from Medical Occupations!

I am very happy to tell you that I am extremely proud of the students.  They are all doing a great job and show great promise.  They are our "future medical professionals."

On Thursday, September 12th, there will be a back to school night here at GHS.  For GHS parents, it will be the normal routine of visiting the student's classes.  For LHS, AVHS, FHS, DHS, DV and VHS, I will be in the classroom from 3:30 to 8:30 to accommodate all parent's schedules.

I want to meet with all parents due to the support and connection this program requires.  Internship will begin on December 2nd and the students will be fitted for their uniforms very soon.  I will let them know when to go to the uniform store in Dublin.  If the student is purchasing their own uniform, please pay for the uniform at the time of the fitting.  Students getting "loaner" uniforms, just get fitted. The store will have a list.

All immunizations, vaccinations, CPR and TB testing should be complete by now.  If you have any questions, please let me know.

Please contact me at lerceg@lvjusd.k12.ca.us or call (925) 606-4800 x 3640 to RSVP before 9/5.

Thank you very much and I will see you on September 12th!

Mrs. Erceg

Critical Thinking Thursday Today

Hi Everyone!

On Thursdays, during the next few months, we will be dedicating our brains to critical thinking and problem solving.  Feel free to bring school or workplace scenarios that you can contribute, real or imagined.

Today's challenge is:

Is it possible to  "teach" someone to be COMPASSIONATE?  What do you think?

HOMEWORK:

What is your LEARNING STYLE?  (25 points)

Take this survey first:  (it will determine your learning style)

http://sunburst.usd.edu/~bwjames/tut/learning-style/stylest.html

Once you know your learning style, research three ways that you can improve learning and retaining information, then go to this website and PRINT OUT BOTH pages or write down strategies for YOUR learning style, see website below:

http://online.santarosa.edu/homepage/amerkel/Study_Strategies.pdf

Be ready for starting our infection control module tomorrow.  Please watch this video:

http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=handwashing+video&view=detail&mid=4DF73811523FA89AAB174DF73811523FA89AAB17&first=0&FORM=NVPFVR&adlt=strict

Or....type in Healthcare Worker Hand Hygiene and see this picture   There is even one on YouTube called Handwashing Gangnam Style HA HA

Think about:

1.  What type of specialty area are you interested in?  I really appreciate those of you that
say - "I trust your Match.com system Mrs. Erceg."  :-)  If you are interested in dental/oral
surgery or veterinary, I will place you in those areas.

2.  Who in history, dead or alive, would you like to write about regarding the history
of medicine?  The more obscure people will not be as easy to research, so I will need to know
who you have chosen (approval process).  (nobelprize.org or http://www.netplaces.com/american-
     history/the-age-of-industry-invention-and-discovery/early-medical-pioneers.htm)

3.  Why is nutrition important?  Please think of about 10 non-perishable items that you can
carry in your backpack or bag that you can "graze" on during the day.  Choose healthy
proteins and add some carbohydrates.  Example:  apple, string cheese, crackers. I will ask you
to write these up and create a shopping list.  Fun and easy recipes/food combinations welcome!
