Have a restful and healthy weekend!

Get some rest.  Take some time and do some creative visualization this weekend. Find a quiet, peaceful place and get comfortable.  Imagine great things happening for you and in turn, manifest these things into reality.  You have this power.  You've had it all along.  Sounds a little like the Wizard of Oz, right?  Well, unlike the movie, you make things happen for YOU in the real world -with a little help sometimes.  Remember, there are people who make things happen, people who watch what happens and then there are people who wonder what happened.  Sheesh, I hope you don't decide to be in the last two categories.

HOMEWORK:     How is your KEENAN SAFE SCHOOLS project going?  Only 13 days remaining until it is due.  Please do not procrastinate - this is a 200 point project!

Skills Practice Day and College and Career Night!

I am glad to see that you experienced clinical skills today. We will continue practicing. Let me know your weak areas and we will strengthen them!!!  TONIGHT: AVHS 6:30 to 8:30 COLLEGE/CAREER NIGHT in the small and large gyms.

By the way, THERE WAS A TEST TODAY. I am watching you all carefully.  If you do not appear interested in completing these skills, or in the class itself, I will be talking to you.  I will not place any student at an internship site unless I am convinced they are serious about doing a good job for me and this program.  A small percentage of you took advantage of the fact that I could not be everywhere in the room at once.  Goofing off is not the way to convince me of your internship worthiness. Everyone needs to practice, practice and practice clinical and administrative skills. Be mindful of this, please. If you think that I am concerned about your commitment to the program.....prove me wrong!!!

How is your KEENAN SAFE SCHOOLS project going?  There are about 5 of you that are finished!

Clinical and Administrative Skills

Tomorrow, we are working on our clinical skills lab.  I will also be  incorporating many administrative functions like telephone etiquette.  Listen how others in clinics, offices or processional settings answer the phone and if you feel they sound appropriate and/or professional. Report your findings!

Alissa P. - Thank you!  You are the first person to bring in something for our holiday gift drive.  We can use all of the products and gifts we can get.  I will continue to encourage others to do the same!

FYI ONLY - this is not homework.  We will review this is class.

There were some questions about calculating BMI today.
Check this out:  http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/guidelines/obesity/BMI/bmicalc.htm

There are factors like race, age and gender that can affect accuracy in BMI results.  For now, this is how to calculate BMI for an adult person.

Calculate BMI

The BMI formula is:

Weight in pounds (lbs) divided by height in inches (in) squared and multiplied by a conversion factor of 703 (weight (lbs) / [height (in)2] x 703).

Therefore, to calculate BMI, take the weight (lbs) and divide it by height (in). Take the result of that calculation and divide it by height again. Then, multiply that number by 703. Round to the second decimal place.

An example of calculating body mass index using the BMI formula: Weight = 150 lbs, Height = 5'5" (65 inches)

BMI Calculation: [150 ÷ (65)2] x 703 = 24.96             24.96 is in the healthy range

Have a great night.

Feeling a bit "gassy?"

HOMEWORK TONIGHT:  Turn in your fully completed "MY TIME MANAGEMENT PLAN" on the handout I gave you or create a table on word. It must have seven days (Monday to Sunday) filled in so you can plan for next week or any week you like. Make it your own way if you want to, as long as it is effective and I don't constantly hear...."I forgot" or  "I didn't plan ahead"....blah blah blah

Thanks to all of those participating in our discussion today on "gas."  It was very, uh....entertaining.

Here are some fun facts for you....

Passing gas. Passing gas around 13 to 21 times a day is normal. Flatulence is excessive gas in the stomach or intestine that can cause bloating and flatus. Flatulence may be the result of problems digesting certain carbohydrates.

Which foods cause gas?

Most foods that contain carbohydrates can cause gas. In contrast, fats and proteins cause little gas. Foods that produce gas in one person may not cause gas in someone else, depending on how well individuals digest carbohydrates and the type of bacteria present in the intestines.
Some foods that may cause gas include
  • beans
  • vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, brussels sprouts, onions, mushrooms, artichokes, and asparagus
  • fruits such as pears, apples, and peaches
  • whole grains such as whole wheat and bran
  • sodas; fruit drinks, especially apple juice and pear juice; and other drinks that contain high-fructose corn syrup, a sweetener made from corn
  • milk and milk products such as cheese, ice cream, and yogurt
  • packaged foods—such as bread, cereal, and salad dressing—that contain small amounts of lactose, a sugar found in milk and foods made with milk
  • sugar-free candies and gums that contain sugar alcohols such as sorbitol, mannitol, and xylitol
Have a somewhat "silent" night.  Watch out for the silent ones though. HA HA
