Have a GREAT weekend and please let me know if you are going to your site on Monday, 1/20.

Here is the short version of Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech...so inspiring.  Feel free to go to the longer version online.  Be mindful of what this man did and represented, even if you have already listened to it.  You are older now and may get a lot more out of it.  Go ahead...listen with your eyes closed.  Connect with what you are grateful for and let me know if you have feedback for me. I would love to talk to you about it.

An Open Letter to Medical Occupations Students and Families!!!

Community Classroom hours given for HELPING!
Hey Med Occupations!
This is Samantha from the AM Class. I am writing because I wanted to make a note to you about Hannah, my friend with Cystic Fibrosis. A little overview on CF: It is a genetic lung disease, so you are born with it. It affects the lungs by producing excessive amounts of thick mucous that is produced and is difficult to cough up. Common issues with CF is low weight, poor digestion, and difficulty breathing. Imagine breathing through a straw, it is fun for a moment but then your body becomes tired because you're not used to such low amounts of oxygen flowing through your body. Your body begins to ache. The difference between an average person and an individual with CF is that they can't stop breathing through that straw. It's constant. My friend Hannah is 15 years old and we discovered how severe the damage is from her CF. Her left lung is damaged beyond repair and her right lung is not much better. We are officially waiting for her lungs to be categorized as "Failed" and not the current status of "Failing." Despite this recent diagnosis, she has kept up her smiles and her strength. She struggled at first but she has begun to realize who her supporters are. Last week, she was admitted to the hospital to do a 21- day intravenous course of antibiotics. These antibiotics are to hopefully kill the bacteria that harbors in the mucous that is stuck in her lungs. She is still awaiting discharge so she can continue this treatment at home with family and friends.

This past weekend we decided that we would start fundraising for the upcoming costs associated with preparing and having a lung transplant. We will be selling T-shirts and Sweatshirts that on the front have: "I will not give up the fight against Cystic Fibrosis" The backs will have a Team Hannah Logo. The shirts will be $15 and the Sweatshirts are $30. We are also making 65 roses bracelets that will support Hannah, the price on those are still TBD. If you are interested in a shirt, sweatshirt, or bracelet, let me know by texting me at  925 640 7211 or email at sdhenshaw640@yahoo.com
You can also Facebook me. All Proceeds go to Hannah.

Thank you all so much. All help is GREATLY appreciated, by me and Hannah's family. This is your chance to help make a difference. Feel free to call Mrs. Erceg on her cell phone and she will talk to you about community classroom hours/incentives. She is waiting for your call.

Week 4 of Internship...and you are doing great!

As you work on your training plan, here are further instructions.  Bring in your typed draft 1/15.

1.  Use the sample I gave you to get at least 25 items on your training plan (DRAFT).
     Expand your repertoire!
You may also use the CCBMA Examination Study Outline for ideas.  Go online for job
descriptions in your particular specialty.  There is a lot on the internet, including bls.gov.

2.  Talk to your parents about it, they may have some great suggestions as to what to list.

3.  Keep the five categories I gave you on your plan.  For sites with absolutely no laboratory
references, please make a new category like "DIAGNOSTIC TESTS" or "DIAGNOSES
     LEARNED."

4.  Use your CC journal to put items on the list as ones you have observed, performed under
     supervision and those done alone.

5.   List many of your tasks without the intention of putting an "x" in any of the columns on the
right.  This leaves an opening for you and your supervisor to talk about implementation.

WERE YOU EMPLOYED IN 2013?  Talk to your parents....you should have received your W2 stating the wages earned last year.  By law, your employer must send it (them) to you by 1/31/14.

Next week, on 1/15, I will quiz you on the CCBMA Examination Study Outline.  Please review it carefully, highlight areas and be ready in advance of our 1/15/14 meeting in class.

Regarding time sheets:  If you cannot get a signature, call me right away so I can help.  Get signatures on the last day of your week, please don't wait until Monday or Tuesday.  IF YOU ARE ABSENT ON A WEDNESDAY.....call in your hours on the time sheet due that day to the CLASSROOM number:  (925) 606-4800 x 3640.

Are you taking the CCMA exam???  Here are the resources to ask your parents to buy for you:

1.  California Certified Medical Assistant Review Guide (lavender book) $25.00 Call
CCBMA (number is on your HW!) and order with a credit card over the phone.  Please
do not mail your credit card number...you may send a check or order over the phone.

2.  "Q & A Review for the Medical Assistant" by Palko and Palko.  7th Edition or higher.
Try used books on Amazon, Half.com or Textbooks.com  - Used should be about $20 or less.

Have a great evening.

Welcome Back and Happy New Year!

Hello Medical Professionals,

After having been at site three weeks or so, I will assume you have routines well established and are getting to know staff members.  There will be a discussion on Wednesday on "Start Strong, Stay Strong, Finish Strong."  I will ask you to share your ideas on how to accomplish all three.
