Medical Explorers Meeting Tonight - RN Speaker

TONIGHT:   Medical Explorers - Speaker:  RN
                     1015 E. Stanley at the Mertes Feit Education Center   6:00 - 7:00

ALL WOMEN in Medical Occupations:  Are you serious about health care?  If so, consider joining GETSET - Girls Exploring Technology, Science, and Engineering Together.

HOMEWORK:

  • Practice the medical terms for your test on Friday.
  • Take your pulse BEFORE you get out of bed tomorrow, Thursday and Friday. Write it down.
  • Turn in the career center scavenger hunt early if you'd like.  Due on Friday.
  • Type up your mini-biography on your person of interest in medical history and have it ready for Friday.  Hand this to me after your 1-2 minute presentation.

Print this info out on procrastination for a discussion tomorrow.  You may also write it down neatly. Bring it in tomorrow, 9/25. I will ask that you turn this in for a HW check.
PROCRASTINATION…….How do you break the pattern?
TACKLE IT NOW!

1.       Prioritize tasks.  Create a “to do” list.  Categorize these tasks.  Create lists that save you time, like setting up your errands by time and geographic location.  Plan some play time.

2.       Question your beliefs.  Do you tell yourself that you work better under pressure? Prove it. Do one task at the last minute and one ahead of time.  Test other myths, such as “I don’t have the ability” and “it has to be done perfectly”

3.       Control impulsiveness. Most procrastinators jump from one task to another and rarely finish anything. Make yourself complete one task before starting another.

4.       Old habits die hard. Don’t expect to change overnight.  If you change one thing a week, you are making progress!  Acknowledge that and be proud of yourself.  This helps you realize that more change is possible.

Take care,

Mrs. Erceg

Here is the information requested regarding women's use of oral contraceptives and stroke risk.

If you are taking birth control pills you must be aware of all the potential side effects, one of which can be serious for women who smoke. What is so dangerous about taking oral contraceptives if you smoke?
CHECK OUT THIS WEBSITE:
  • smoking Oral contraceptives are pills that women take to prevent pregnancy. They supply a specific combination of synthetic female hormones, estrogen and progestin, to control the female reproductive system so that pregnancy will not occur. The dose of hormones causes several changes — eggs are not released from the ovaries, the lining of the uterus changes so a fertilized egg cannot develop and the cervix changes to stop male sperm from entering.

  • While these hormone pills are very effective for preventing pregnancy, they do come with a long list of potential side effects. Some are minor, such as constipation, acne, and vaginal discharge. Others are more of a health concern, such as an increased risk for liver tumors, for developing breast or liver cancer, and for heart attack, strokes, and blood clots. The possibility of developing a dangerous blood clot is even more of a concern for women who smoke and are on the pill.

Take care,

Mrs. Erceg

BIG NEWS - Medical Occupations Student Saves a Life!

Hi Everyone, I hope you are having a wonderful and infection-free afternoon and evening. Keep practicing your hand washing!

CONGRATULATIONS JAKE S. from the MORNING CLASS!
Jake helped save a nine-year-old girl's life by performing CPR on her at his workplace. His quick thinking, then taking action and calling someone helped make the difference in saving this young girl.  WAY TO GO !!!!!!

HOMEWORK: Due TOMORROW, 9/11
QUESTIONS? Text me before 7:00 p.m. (510-305-5111)

1.Use your "link" of the chain and type up an explanation as to why this is a way to "break" the chain of infection.  Example:  "Treatment of Underlying Diseases" is on one of the links.
Type up a paragraph like this....(or copy and paste, as long as you clearly understand the vocabulary)

Decubital ulcers (bed sores due to pressure on one or more areas, patients need to be moved)

For patients with chronic wounds, efficient causal treatment of the underlying disease is mostly just as important as the actual local wound treatment for healing. The goal is to improve the disrupted micro- and macrocirculation in the skin. A diagnostic clarification of the causes of chronic wounds is, therefore, the first and basic step enabling effective treatment of the patient.  (Perhaps the patient has poor circulation in the first place and that would be an underlying disease/condition that makes the patient more vulnerable to bedsores) For causal treatment of decubital ulcers, the patient’s existing ulcers or vulnerable parts of the skin should be relieved for instance by a special decubitus mattress and regular change of position.  (25 POINTS) DUE TOMORROW

2. Please review your MT "quiz", the one we worked on together, definitions, etc.  Is it complete? I would like you to know if any of the words are  not actual terms/words versus the ones that are. Use a medical dictionary and we will go over it tomorrow in class.

3. BRING IN A FOOD PACKAGE TOMORROW IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY!

Check on the availability of FLU SHOTS!!!   Target stores are currently advertising.  Don't forget.....you MUST bring complete documentation and I will give you a form to take with you.

DONATING BLOOD?  HOMEWORK/BRING EVIDENCE OF REVIEW BY 9/13. GO TO:

CRITICAL THINKING THURSDAY:  Be ready to talk about this tomorrow and on FRIDAY:

In your opinion, what are the elements of decision making?  How do you go about making a decision that you are happy with?  Start with something one needs to decide on and how one can reach their decision in the most fair and intelligent way.
